Frequently Asked Questions

Completing the Application

Can I submit a resume instead of filling in my extra activities, volunteer activities, academic awards and work experience?
No. Fill in all of the tables. Do not send extra documents. Any materials other than those requested by AMDF will be discarded upon arrival.

What if I need more space than is provided in the tables?
Do your best to stay within the tables, keeping your application neat and easy to read. If you need additional space, you may attach a separate sheet(s). Please include your name on all attachments.

Can I submit publications, projects, photographs, training certificates, and other documents to supplement my application?
No. Do not provide additional documents. Any materials other than those requested by AMDF will be discarded upon arrival.

Finances

Why do you ask for financial information?
Because the scholarships we award are based on not only financial need but also we review your academic ability, community service and appreciation of labor. We also take into consideration the financial burden of having more than one sibling in college.

Should I submit tax forms as proof of income?
No. We do not need to obtain this information, unless otherwise requested. Do not provide additional documents. Any materials other than those requested by AMDF will be discarded upon arrival.

Should I submit a copy of my FAFSA form with my application?
No. We do not require your FAFSA information.

Letters Transcripts & Acceptance Letters

Can I apply for the AMDF scholarship if I’m not yet enrolled in a college?
Yes. You will need to send a welcome letter or acceptance letter from the school you plan to attend prior to the disbursement of any funds.

What if I haven’t received an acceptance letter from my school by the April 18 deadline?
If the school you plan to attend hasn’t sent you an acceptance letter by April 18, you are still eligible to apply. If awarded the scholarship, then funds will not be granted until acceptable proof is provided to AMDF.

What if the letter from my school says my acceptance is pending?
A letter that says your acceptance is pending receipt of other documents is eligible. If awarded the scholarship, then funds will not be granted until acceptable proof is provided to AMDF.

What should I do if my school doesn’t issue acceptance letters?
Ask the Admissions Office to produce and sign a letter on official school letterhead stating that you are approved to enroll at their institution.

Do I have to send an “official” transcript?
Yes. You will need to send an official copy of your high school transcript which can usually be obtained, free of charge, from the records office at your high school.

Can I send a class schedule or financial aid award letter instead of a transcript?
No. AMDF must receive an official transcript to verify your GPA.

References

Can a family member write a letter of recommendation for me?
No. Letters of recommendation should not be written by relatives.

What if I don’t know of anyone to write a professional or academic letter for me?
You may ask someone familiar with your personal situation and/or academic goals, such as an employer, a co-worker, a counselor, or a volunteer supervisor. All letters should be written by someone who can attest to your character, interpersonal relationships, and academic achievements.

Can I submit letters of recommendation from more than two references?
No. Only submit letters from two (2) different sources. Any extra letters other than those requested by AMDF will be discarded upon arrival.

What if I’m afraid one of my references won’t write her letter before AMDF deadline?
AMDF isn’t able to accept any documents that are postmarked after the March 1 deadline. So, if you’re worried that one of your references won’t finish your letter in time, we suggest you ask a third reference to write a letter. If all three (3) references come through, you can choose the two (2) letters that you like the best to submit with your application.

Deadline

Does my application have to be at the AMDF office by April 18?
No. Your application simply has to be postmarked by April 18. There is no need to send applications via priority mail or overnight delivery.

Selection

When will the scholars be chosen?
Selection will take place on or before May 1st.

How will I know if I’m chosen?
Due to the large number of applicants that we receive, we can ONLY notify winners by mail about their selection as AMDF Scholarship recipients on or about May 1st. Winners should receive their award letters within the first two weeks of May. AMDF will not be able to advise applicants on the status of their applications. Winners will also be displayed on our website by July 1.

Applicants wishing to receive notification of the winners may send a self-addressed, stamped postcard along with their application.

When will the scholarships be awarded?
This is a one-time cash award to be paid out to the student during his/her first enrolled semester/quarter, etc. All awards will be forwarded directly to the each student’s financial aid office for disbursement, after proof of enrollment has been verified by AMDF. Each student will have up to four (4) calendar months, after enrolling in an accredited institution to provide AMDF with proof of enrollment. Should an applicant fail to provide the adequate proof of enrollment, then the scholarship may be forfeited.
